What is an ignition interlock device, and when is it required?

A DUI conviction in Missouri involves more than just legal penalties and fines. One key consequence includes the potential installation of an ignition interlock device (IID), a mechanism that directly impacts your ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Understanding the function of this device and the legal contexts that trigger its use is important for compliance and legal reinstatement of driving privileges.

What an ignition interlock device does

An ignition interlock device (IID) is an alcohol detection system integrated into a vehicle’s ignition mechanism. Before the vehicle can start, the driver must exhale into the device, which measures blood alcohol concentration (BAC). If the BAC exceeds a preset threshold—typically 0.025%—the system prevents the engine from starting. Periodic retests while driving help ensure ongoing sobriety.

The device stores all data, including test results and any tampering attempts, which authorities can later review as part of compliance monitoring.

When Missouri law requires the device

Missouri statutes mandate the use of IIDs under several conditions. Drivers seeking license reinstatement after a DUI must install the device for at least six months. A second DUI offense extends the requirement to one year. Courts may impose longer durations for individuals classified as “persistent offenders.” Additionally, individuals applying for a Limited Driving Privilege (LDP) during a suspension period must equip their vehicles with an IID.

All associated costs—installation, maintenance, and eventual removal—fall on the driver. Failure to make timely payments or noncompliance with breath testing can result in further legal consequences, including extended IID duration or license re-suspension.

How it affects your daily routine

The IID introduces logistical challenges and time constraints into a driver’s routine. It may delay your commute and disrupt schedules due to mandatory breath samples. Devices equipped with cameras ensure the correct individual performs the test, eliminating the possibility of surrogate use. Drivers who rely on their vehicles for work or education must factor in these operational hurdles.

Moving forward with confidence

Compliance with IID regulations after a DUI conviction demonstrates accountability and supports license reinstatement. Familiarizing yourself with the device’s operation and Missouri’s legal requirements can help you manage obligations effectively and minimize setbacks.
